The caduceus
Two serpents twining the herald’s rod.
The rod runs the full width and the serpents advance along it: what has been read is twined, what is left is bare rod, and the two heads sit at the join and travel as you go. The twining is the progress indicator — there is no bar anywhere, and the whole width is the measure.

Reading progress across the top or foot of a long page.
Budget
- One per document, and never alongside a chariot — two progress indicators is a contradiction.
- Give it the full width. Twining needs room to cross the rod; in a narrow column it reads as a zigzag.
- Keep `swing` under half the height or the coil clips flat and stops reading as a twist.
Restraint is the aesthetic, and it does not survive being applied generously. These limits are the specification, not advice.
