The vine

A stem that puts out leaves behind it as it grows, never ahead.

The stem draws across and leaves open behind it as it passes — never ahead of it, because the vine has not reached there yet. A rule that fades in is decoration; one that grows is a plant.

Integration

Slot

A light divider between passages of text.

Budget

  • Two per page at most.
  • Never between every section — the growth stops meaning anything.

Restraint is the aesthetic, and it does not survive being applied generously. These limits are the specification, not advice.
