Curtains of light over a night sky

Built as the pair to nephele, because a cloud deck at midnight is a dark grey mass — correct, and the least interesting thing that component does. This one is only night. Between them, sky has a visible face at every hour on the clock. It is on the shelf for nephele’s reason: unmistakable, and not Greek in any way a person would recognise. σέλας is at least the word Greek uses for it.

An aurora emits rather than reflects, so there is no march toward the sun and no self-shadowing — the loop that costs nephele most of its time does not exist here. Curtains are sheets, so instead of walking a 3D volume this intersects the ray with a stack of horizontal planes and samples a two-dimensional Kali fold at each one: every sample lands on something, where a uniform march spends most of its steps on empty air. Colour is keyed to height in the world, the way real emission lines are, and never to time or to the field’s own value. Inside an <anthemion-sky> the curtains fade as the sun climbs and are gone by mid-morning.
