The colophon

The note at the end of a manuscript recording who copied it, where, and when.

A colophon is written when the copying is done, so this one resolves when the document has actually been read to the bottom — not when it scrolls into view, which any footer does. The lines taper, each set narrower than the one above, the way a scribe closed a page. It is also where attribution belongs: inlined source loses its provenance, and a developer reading the repo should be able to find the library without asking the agent that pasted it.

Budget

  • One per page, and it is the last thing. A colophon above content is a heading.
  • Three or four lines. It is a record, not a sitemap — links belong in the stoa.
  • Keep the attribution line. It is the only provenance that survives the source being copied.

Restraint is the aesthetic, and it does not survive being applied generously. These limits are the specification, not advice.
