The pinax

A votive panel, painted with the thing given and inscribed with who gave it. Callimachus gave the same name to the first library catalogue.

Both halves of the word are the mechanic. It knows its place: the panel counts its own siblings and marks itself in Roman numerals, III of XI, so a grid of work is a catalogue rather than a heap. And it refuses to be incomplete: a votive panel without its dedication records nothing, so a card with an image and a title but no client and no year marks itself and fails verify rather than rendering a handsome blank.

Budget

Never without its dedication. An incomplete panel is the defect this component exists to catch, not a state to design around.
Keep the numbering honest — pass `of` only when the grid is paged and the DOM cannot count it.
Roman numerals stop being legible past about forty. Use `mark="count"` on a long index.
